Helpful Winter Tips - To prevent frozen water meters and water service lines:
- Insulate and caulk areas where pipes are exposed to cold air.
- Use heat tape on pipes where they have frozen before.
- Let water run slowly; a small steady stream coming from the spigot to the bottom of the sink. Running and moving water doesn’t
freeze easily. The cost of the water is minimal compared to the cost and inconvenience of replacing your broken service line.
- Use space heaters in areas such as fruit cellars and crawl spaces where plumbing is exposed. Be sure to follow all Fire Safety rules.
- Open doors and closets where plumbing is being concealed. This allows warm air to circulate and prevent water meter and pipes from freezing.
