Water
Mains Flushed
As part of the
Merrimack Village District’s ongoing maintenance
program, we will begin flushing water mains and hydrants
on April 30 in the south end of town.
Flushing
is done to maintain water quality throughout our
distribution system. This program involves opening flushing valves
to create increased water flows, which dislodge and
clean out naturally occurring sedimentation in the pipelines.
It may cause minor flooding of streets and slight
discoloration of water and/or a short period
of low pressure. Areas surrounding these streets may also experience
water discoloration. The Merrimack Village District would like to
reassure customers that the water is safe to drink and any discoloration
should clear up in 2 – 3
hours. Flushing will occur between the hours of 8:30
AM to 3:00 PM.
Residential
customers with special water needs for medical reasons are urged
to call the District office at 424-9241 x 100 so they can be notified
in advance of flushing in their area.

Merrimack
is the only community in the state to receive
the distinction of becoming a Groundwater
Guardian Community through the National Groundwater Foundation.

Flushing
Program
The
District has a unidirectional flushing
program in the spring and fall to improve water quality with the
distribution system. Notification is sent out weekly via the public
education channel and the two local newspapers to inform customers
of our progress.
Valve
Exercising Program
The
program goes hand-in-hand with our flushing
program. Our field staff goes out twice a year and
turn valves to ensure they are in good working condition.
Backflow
Prevention Device Program
Why do I need a backflow device?
A backflow device is attached to any water supply line (currently commercial properties only). Should there be a decrease or increase in pressure the device protects any contaminated
water from being back siphoned into the public water system.
The program is required by the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (DES). We have certified testers/inspectors who visit local businesses that have these devices installed
and perform operational checks. These checks are performed yearly for all units. Those units in special areas will be checked on a semi-annual basis. This program is resulting in a steady improvement
of water quality and the added security of knowing that contaminants will not be a factor. |
